Tracy Armstrong Tracy Armstrong

Tracy Armstrong, Yoga teacher, natural health advocate, loving daughter and easy-going friend, has been teaching yoga in Townsville since 1999. She is one of the most reputable yoga teachers in Townsville renowned for her knowledge of yoga anatomy and the ability to personify the poses. She is often described as strict, though Tracy would prefer to call it attention to detail.

At the age of 26, already well on the path of natural health, Tracy sought out Yoga after developing back pain through her work at a plant nursery. Initially, she started practicing yoga from video and then joined a beginner course with local yoga teacher, Sinita Fry. Seeing Tracy’s potential early on, Sinita would often use her to demonstrate the poses on and planted the seed for Tracy to take up the full time study of Yoga in Cairns at the Ashtanga Yoga Academy. A couple of years later, Tracy relocated to Cairns to undertake Yoga Teacher Training however her goal was not to be a teacher. Tracy’s objective was personal growth and she knew this was the method she needed to make the desirable changes in her life.

Tracy’s initial training in 1997 was intense and confronting to say the least. She was sore for the first month and abruptly made aware of self-deprecating thoughts over the next eleven! The twelve month course with Nicky Knoff and James Bryan was well rounded covering both the Iyengar and Astanga method, study of authorative texts, adjusting, pranayama, meditation and pregnancy. Tracy proceeded to work under her teachers for another year before returning to Townsville and establishing North Queensland Yoga School in 1999. She has been teaching there ever since.

Tracy loves to learn and has continued professional development in the Iyengar Yoga method under Senior Iyengar Teacher Peter Scott and at the Ramani Memorial Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. Learning directly from Geeta and Prashant and practicing alongside Guruji is one of her career highlights. Another is studying with Mira Mehta, author of Yoga the Iyengar Way, How to Use Yoga and Health Through Yoga. This course gave great clarity to the teachings and the therapeutic power of Yoga. Tracy’s strength as a teacher lay in her ability to adjust and correct the poses to suit the individual – essential to receive the full benefits of the postures.
